Cohere was founded in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, Nick Frosst, and Ivan Zhang, with a mission to make cutting-edge language models more accessible to enterprise customers. Gomez, best known as a co-author of the seminal “Attention Is All You Need” paper that introduced transformers to the world, teamed up with former Google Brain and academic peers to build an independent alternative to hyperscaler-backed research labs. Since then, Cohere has raised capital from leading investors and positioned itself as a secure, flexible platform for enterprise-grade AI, focused on data privacy, cloud neutrality, and fine-tuned model deployment.

Cohere’s core differentiation lies in its enterprise-first mindset. The company offers private deployments on VPCs and on-prem environments, tools for model customization, and RAG infrastructure to reduce hallucinations. It has built a reputation for privacy and control, attracting enterprise customers looking for compliant AI integrations. Its team includes notable hires from DeepMind, AWS, Apple, and Oxford, and the company has collaborated with partners like Jasper, Hyperwrite, and LivePerson on customer engagement and copywriting use cases.

That said, the company trails category leaders such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta in model performance, developer adoption, and visibility. While it remains one of a small number of well-funded independent labs, it has yet to produce a breakout product or model that shifts the trajectory of the industry. Cohere’s infrastructure is sound, its GTM motion is maturing, and its focus on security and customization resonates with enterprise IT buyers—but its long-term defensibility will depend on whether it can close the performance gap and establish a compelling, differentiated platform layer in an increasingly competitive landscape.
